At the technical level, the xDrive system of the new BMW X1 is composed of a single-ratio angular transmission, defined as Power-Take-Off, mounted on the front differential, and a rear differential with a Hang-On type clutch, with electro-hydraulic adjustment. The two components are connected to each other through a bipartite Cardan shaft. In normal driving situations, the drive torque is transmitted to the front wheels. Should the driving situation require it, the Hang-On clutch provides, in fractions of a second and without the driver realizing, through an electro-hydraulic pump, to transmit up to 100% of the force to the rear wheels.
The Ideal Distribution
The pump control unit permanently obtains data relevant to the analysis of the driving situation, such as speed, from the DSC system. transverse and longitudinal acceleration, steering angle, number of wheel revolutions, longitudinal tilt, accelerator pedal position and setting of the driving mode selection button, as well as stability adjustments driving. On this basis, the system continuously detects and produces the ideal distribution of force between the front and rear wheels.
